Dr. Xu examines how social change, race/ethnicity and religion affect family lives in the United States.  Over the past few years, Dr. Xu has developed a well-recognized expertise in the area of comparative family studies.  His research projects explore the changing trends in marriage and family relationships in the People’s Republic of China, Taiwan and the United States.  As a research scientist, he is currently working with Dr. Karen Woodrow-Lafield on the analysis of the relationship between U.S. immigration and naturalization.  Over the past two years, he has served as a reviewer for the Ford Foundation-supported Sociology Training Program in China and the National Council on Family Relations.  Dr. Xu’s research has appeared in or is under review for such journals as Journal of Marriage and the Family, Journal of Family Issues, Journal of Comparative Family Studies, American Journal of Public Health, Youth & Society, Social Indicators Research, Sociological Quarterly, Sociological Spectrum, Rural Sociology and Journal of Asian and African Studies.
