Dr. Karen Koch is a clinical pharmacist who is coordinator of clinical research at North Mississippi Health Systems (NMHS). During her 13-year tenure at NMHS, she implemented the clinical pharmacy program and evaluated and published papers on numerous clinical pharmacy practice issues such as adverse drug event (ADE) management, clinical management pathways, drug usage evaluation (DUE) and collaborative drug therapy management. During the last four years her research interests expanded beyond pharmacy practice and to include patient care improvement processes and rural health systems. She has performed and published clinical outcomes research on the management of stroke, pneumonia, HIV and other conditions. Dr. Koch has served as a consultant to the FDA on adverse drug events and has been a member of two United States Pharmacopeia’s Advisory Panels (DUE and American Medical Association). She also helped develop position papers on ADE management and clinical management pathways for the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Some of her work has appeared in the following journals: American Journal of Medicine, Stroke, Journal of American Medical Association, Journal of American Society of Health-System Pharmacy and Journal of Clinical Outcomes Management. Dr. Koch is a board-certified pharmacotherapy specialist and is a fellow in the ASHP.
