Dr. Guangqing Chi is an Assistant Professor of Sociology, a Research Scientist at the Social Science Research Center, and a Coordinator of the Computational and Spatial Analysis Laboratory of Department of Sociology at Mississippi State University. He received a Ph.D. degree in Environmental Demography from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2006. Guangqing is a demographer and sociologist skilled in spatial analysis. His program of research seeks to examine the interactions between human population and the built and natural environment upon which we all depend. He has been pursuing this objective through three interwoven areas of research which include the sociology of transportation, population-environment interactions, and population estimation and forecasting. The three areas of research build upon his methodological strengths in spatial analysis and statistics. In 2007, Guangqing received the Walter E. Terrie Award from the Southern Demographic Association for his development of spatial regression models for small-area population forecasting. Currently, Guangqing applies spatial analysis and statistical techniques to study population redistribution and its relationship to land use change and natural resources. He also studies the role that gasoline prices play in affecting commuting behaviors, residential relocation and traffic levels.
