The prologue began at the outskirts of Ax-les-Thermes, and climbed steadily to the highpoint of the village. Leading the assault up the mountain - while attired in flip-flops, McMillen virtually flew up the narrow road with Chris and Ric tucked neatly behind in his draft. On the descent back into town, the TdM racers were forced to contend with the chaos created by the Tour de France. In the end Ric heeded to caution, while Chris and Robert contested the final sprint. Robert held Chris off to take the stage and the leader's jersey. The Rabid Chihauhau also claimed the climber's jersey.
