Freshmen Retention Project
The Freshman Retention Project, known to most as the Pathfinders program, began in the fall of 1998 through an internal research project by Mississippi State University’s Office of Academic Affairs. It is now an ongoing research endeavor of the SSRC.
The purpose of the program is to enhance the academic performance of freshmen and to increase the number of freshmen continuing their education on to their sophomore year. The ultimate goal is for the students to graduate within six years of starting college.
The Pathfinders program assists incoming freshmen in getting easily transitioned to college life. The Pathfinders staff wants freshmen to become personally responsible and self-directed in an environment that is very different from and more challenging than high school. The largest task is tracking freshman attendance. Professors and instructors are encouraged to report student absences so that Pathfinders staff can offer assistance to those who are having trouble.
